Your fridge runs 24 hours a day, so some noise is normal: the hum of the compressor cycling on, the sound of water filling the ice maker, the occasional pop as parts expand with temperature changes. But a new noise, or an existing noise that has gotten noticeably louder, is usually a signal worth paying attention to.

Loud buzzing or humming

Dirty condenser coils: When condenser coils get clogged with dust and pet hair, the compressor works harder and runs louder. Cleaning the coils every 6–12 months is good preventive maintenance.

Failing compressor: A compressor that’s beginning to fail often gets louder over time before stopping entirely. If the buzzing is coming from the back bottom of the fridge and is getting worse, have a technician assess it — compressor failure means no cooling.

Ice maker filling: A brief buzz every few hours is often just the water valve opening to fill the ice maker. Normal.

Clicking sounds

Compressor cycling: A click when the compressor starts or stops is completely normal on most fridges.

Rapid clicking that won’t stop: If the fridge is clicking repeatedly and not cooling, the compressor may be trying to start but failing — often due to a bad start relay. Relatively inexpensive to repair.

Rattling or vibrating

Loose drain pan: The drip pan at the bottom can rattle if bumped. Re-seat or secure it.

Evaporator fan hitting ice: Frost build-up on the evaporator coils can cause a fan blade to catch and rattle. This usually means the defrost system has failed.

Refrigerant flow: A gentle gurgling from inside the walls is often refrigerant moving through the system — normal.

Squealing or squeaking

A high-pitched squeal from the freezer almost always points to one thing: the evaporator fan motor bearing is wearing out. As the bearing fails it squeals — and eventually the fan stops, causing the fridge to warm up. Fix this before the fan fails completely.

Grinding noise

Ice maker grinding: Grinding when ice is dispensing can mean cubes are jammed, or the ice maker auger motor is failing.

Fan blade hitting ice: Heavy frost on the back wall of the freezer combined with a grinding sound usually means a failed defrost heater or thermostat.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if the noise is new and getting louder, the fridge isn’t cooling as well as it used to, there’s rapid clicking and the compressor won’t start, you hear squealing from the freezer, or there’s excessive frost build-up alongside the noise.
