A washer that won't drain won't fix itself — here's what's going on inside the machine.

You open the washer to move your clothes to the dryer and find them sitting in a tub full of water. The cycle finished — or stopped partway through — and nothing drained. It's one of the most common washer problems we deal with across Toronto and the GTA, and it almost always means something inside the machine has failed.
Here's what's usually going on, and why you shouldn't keep running the machine while waiting to get it fixed.
A washing machine that won't drain is almost always a mechanical issue — not a settings problem, not a fluke, and not something that fixes itself on the next cycle. The most common causes involve the drain pump, the hose system, or a safety switch that's detected a fault and stopped the machine mid-cycle.
The specifics depend on your machine's brand, model, and age, which is why a proper diagnosis matters. Running the machine repeatedly while it has a drainage problem puts stress on the pump and motor — what could be a straightforward repair can become a more expensive one if it keeps being used.
Both front-load and top-load washers can develop drainage problems, but the underlying cause often differs between the two. Front-loaders are more complex mechanically and have more components involved in the drain cycle. Top-loaders tend to have simpler drain systems but can still fail due to pump issues or lid safety switches.
Either way, the fix requires a technician to properly assess what's failed. We repair both types across all major brands.
A drain failure isn't always sudden. There are often warning signs in the days or weeks before the machine fully stops draining:
If you've been noticing any of these, the machine has been struggling for a while. The earlier you get it looked at, the simpler the fix tends to be.
This is the most important thing to understand: a washer with a drainage problem gets worse with continued use, not better. The components under strain — particularly the pump motor — can fail completely if pushed, turning a repair job into a much larger one.
Stop running the machine. Get it diagnosed. It's almost always a faster and less expensive outcome than waiting.
