The thermal fuse is a one-use safety device on the exhaust duct that blows when the dryer overheats. Once blown, it cuts all power to the heating element and the dryer produces no heat at all. It's the single most common cause of a Whirlpool dryer not heating. We replace the fuse AND inspect the exhaust vent — because a clogged vent is almost always what caused it to blow in the first place.
On electric Whirlpool dryers, the heating element is a coiled resistance wire inside a metal housing. When it burns out (a visible break in the coil), the circuit is open and no heat is generated. The high-limit thermostat sits on the heating element housing and shuts off the element if temperatures exceed a safe threshold. A failed thermostat can either stay open (cutting heat permanently) or stay closed (causing overheating). We test it with a multimeter and replace it if it's reading out of spec.
The cycling thermostat regulates the temperature inside the drum during a cycle — turning the heating element on and off to maintain the right heat level. When it fails, the element either never turns on (no heat) or never turns off (overheating and tripped thermal fuse). A cycling thermostat fault usually causes clothes to come out slightly warm but never fully dry.
A clogged lint trap housing, a kinked duct behind the dryer, or a bird's nest in the exterior vent cap restricts airflow and causes heat to back up. The dryer's safety systems then cut the heating element to prevent a fire. This shows up as F30 on newer Whirlpool models. We check the full exhaust path from the dryer to the exterior wall vent during every heating diagnosis.
On Whirlpool gas dryers, no heat usually means the igniter has cracked and failed, or one of the gas valve coils (solenoids) has burned out. The drum spins and the igniter may glow briefly, but if the coils don't hold the valve open, no gas flows and no flame is produced. We test the igniter and all valve coils and replace the failed component.
Newer Whirlpool dryers display F-codes when a fault is detected. Here are the three most common heat-related codes:
The exhaust thermistor is reading a temperature that's too high. Almost always caused by a blocked exhaust vent trapping heat. Clean the vent first; if F22 persists, the thermistor itself has failed and needs replacement.
The thermistor circuit has broken or shorted. The dryer can't monitor exhaust temperature, so it shuts down heating as a safety measure. The thermistor and its wiring harness need to be tested and replaced.
The dryer's airflow sensor detected that the exhaust is blocked. This is a fire hazard warning — the dryer shuts off heating until airflow is restored. Check and clean the lint trap housing, the duct behind the dryer, and the exterior vent cap. If the thermal fuse already blew from the heat buildup, it needs replacement too.
