A Samsung fridge that stops cooling is a food-safety emergency — and one of the most common repair calls we receive in Toronto. Samsung French door and side-by-side fridges have specific failure patterns that we've diagnosed hundreds of times across the GTA. We Fix It Appliances carries Samsung refrigerator parts on the truck and fixes most cooling faults in a single same-day visit.

Which Symptom Do You Have?

The symptom tells us a lot before we even arrive. Pick yours:

Fridge warm, freezer still cold

Classic defrost failure. Frost has built up on the evaporator coils and is blocking the fan. The freezer stays cold because it's next to the coils; the fridge gets no airflow.

Both fridge and freezer warm

Compressor or sealed system fault. The start relay is often the culprit — a small, inexpensive part. Could also be a refrigerant leak or compressor failure.

Showing 22E, 21E, or 40E error

Fan motor fault. 22E = fridge evaporator fan, 21E = freezer fan, 40E = ice room fan. The fan has stopped spinning and cold air isn't circulating.

Fridge cooling but not enough

Partially blocked defrost, a dirty condenser coil, or a failing fan. The fridge is trying to cool but can't reach the right temperature.

6 Reasons Your Samsung Fridge Stopped Cooling

Samsung Error Codes — Cooling Faults

Samsung fridges display error codes on the front panel when a fault is detected. Here are the most common cooling-related codes:

22E / 22C — Fridge Evaporator Fan Error

The fridge section evaporator fan has stopped or is blocked by ice. Fridge section warms up while freezer may stay cold. We replace the fan motor assembly — stocked on the truck.

21E / 21C — Freezer Evaporator Fan Error

The freezer fan motor has failed. Both compartments lose cooling when the freezer fan stops. Common on RF series French door models.

40E / 40C — Ice Room Fan Error

The ice compartment fan has failed on models with a dedicated ice maker compartment. Can affect overall fridge cooling on Twin Cooling Plus models. Ice maker may stop producing ice simultaneously.

PC ER — Communication Error

The main control board has lost communication with the display panel or a sub-board. This can prevent the defrost cycle and compressor commands from executing. We test board communication and replace the failed board.

5E / SE — Defrost Sensor Error

The defrost sensor (thermistor) in the freezer has failed or is reading out of range. Without a functioning sensor, the defrost cycle may not run at all — leading to the progressive frost buildup that eventually blocks cooling.

Try This Before You Call

Two things you can do right now that may help:

  1. Force a manual defrost. On most Samsung fridges, holding the "Power Freeze" and "Fridge" buttons simultaneously for 8–10 seconds puts the fridge into forced defrost mode. Let it run for 20–30 minutes, then unplug and replug. If the fridge starts cooling after this, the defrost system has failed and a technician is still needed — but at least you've bought time to protect your food.
  2. Check the condenser coils. Pull the fridge away from the wall. If the coils on the back are completely coated in dust and lint, vacuum them off carefully with a brush attachment. A severely clogged condenser can reduce cooling capacity significantly.

If the fridge isn't cooling after those steps, a component has failed and needs to be replaced. Don't let food sit at unsafe temperatures while waiting. Call 647-584-1289 — we treat fridge not cooling as a same-day priority.

Samsung Fridge Models We Repair in Toronto

We fix cooling faults on all Samsung fridge series sold in Canada.

Samsung French Door (RF Series)

Samsung Side-by-Side (RS Series)

RS25J500DSR, RS22T5201SR, RS27T5200SR. Ice maker failures, water dispenser, defrost, condenser coil cleaning, compressor relay.

Samsung 4-Door Flex (RF Series)

RF23M8090SG, RF28K9380SG. FlexZone drawer cooling faults, dual ice maker failures, cooling inconsistency between zones.

Samsung Top-Mount (RT Series)

RT18M6215SG, RT21M6213SG. Defrost heater, evaporator fan, thermostat, and compressor relay repairs on top-mount and top-freezer models.

Samsung Twin Cooling Plus

Two independent evaporators — one for fridge, one for freezer. When one frosts over, that compartment loses cooling. We service the full Twin Cooling Plus system.

Samsung Counter-Depth

RF17R5101SR, RF22R7351SG counter-depth. Same cooling systems as standard-depth models — fully serviceable same day.

Frequently Asked Questions — Samsung Fridge Not Cooling

Why is my Samsung fridge not cooling?

The most common causes are a frosted-over evaporator (defrost system failure), a failed evaporator fan motor, dirty condenser coils, a faulty compressor start relay, or a refrigerant leak. Samsung French door fridges are especially prone to defrost failures. We diagnose same day and fix most Samsung cooling faults in one visit.

My Samsung fridge is warm but the freezer is still cold — what does that mean?

Classic defrost failure. Frost has built up on the evaporator coils and blocked the fan from circulating cold air into the fridge section. The freezer stays cold because it's directly adjacent to the frosted coils. We run a forced defrost, identify the failed heater or thermostat, and replace it.

Both my Samsung fridge and freezer are warm — is that worse?

It means the compressor or refrigeration system has stopped. The start relay is often the culprit — it's small and inexpensive. A full compressor failure is more serious. We test the relay first, then the compressor and refrigerant charge to pinpoint the fault before recommending any repair.

What does Samsung fridge error code 22E mean?

22E means the fridge evaporator fan motor has failed. Cold air can't circulate into the fridge section. The fridge warms up while the freezer may stay cold. We replace the Samsung evaporator fan assembly — we stock this on the truck.

How much does it cost to fix a Samsung fridge that won't cool?

We charge a flat $95 diagnostic fee. If you proceed with the repair, that $95 is credited toward your total. You get a firm upfront quote before we start any work — no surprises.

How quickly can you come?

A fridge not cooling is a food-safety emergency. Call 647-584-1289 before noon and we can usually have a technician at your home the same day across Toronto and the GTA.

Is it worth repairing a Samsung fridge?

In most cases, yes. A defrost heater, fan motor, or start relay repair is far less expensive than a new Samsung French door fridge. If your Samsung is under 10 years old and the repair cost is less than half the replacement price, repair almost always makes financial sense. We give you an honest recommendation after the $95 diagnostic.

Do you repair Samsung Twin Cooling Plus fridges?

Yes. Samsung Twin Cooling Plus models use two separate evaporators — one for the fridge, one for the freezer. We service all Twin Cooling Plus models including the RF28, RF23, and RF22 series.
