Different noises point to different parts. Find yours:
Starts loud, sometimes fades after a few minutes of running. Almost always the idler pulley — its bearing is worn and it squeals against the belt under tension. Worsens over weeks until the pulley seizes and the belt snaps.
Metal-on-metal feel to the noise, often from the back or sides of the drum. Worn drum glide bearing or drum support rollers that have seized through. Gets louder over time and will eventually stall the drum.
A steady thump in sync with the drum rotation. Worn drum support rollers that have developed flat spots. A stretched or damaged belt can also cause irregular thumping. Check first for a coin or zipper caught in the drum fins.
Usually a foreign object — a coin, button, bra underwire, or zipper pull — caught between the drum and the door seal, or bouncing around inside the drum fins. Check pockets and remove the foreign object before calling.
The idler pulley keeps tension on the drive belt so the drum keeps turning. Its bearing wears out over years of use and develops a high-pitched squeal, especially when cold. The noise often fades after the dryer warms up, which tricks people into thinking it fixed itself. It hasn't. The pulley continues to degrade until it seizes, the belt snaps, and the drum stops turning completely. We replace the idler pulley — it's a straightforward repair and one of the most common dryer fixes we do on Whirlpool models.
The front of the Whirlpool drum sits on a plastic glide ring that lets it rotate smoothly. Over time the nylon glide wears through and the drum starts rubbing on the metal front bulkhead. You'll hear a grinding or scraping sound from the front of the dryer, and sometimes a dark residue appears on clothes from the worn plastic. We replace the drum glide bearing and inspect the front bulkhead for wear.
Whirlpool dryers use two drum support rollers at the back of the drum to keep it turning smoothly. When the roller bearings wear out or the roller develops a flat spot, you get a rhythmic thumping or rumbling sound that pulses with each rotation. We always replace rollers in pairs — if one is worn, the other is close behind. We also replace the idler pulley and belt at the same time since all three have similar service lives.
The drive belt wraps around the drum, the idler pulley, and the motor to spin the drum. A worn belt can stretch, fray, or develop weak spots that cause a flapping or thumping sound. A broken belt means the drum stops turning entirely — the dryer runs and heats but nothing rotates. We carry Whirlpool drive belts on the truck and replace them in a single visit.
Drum baffles are the fins inside the drum that tumble your clothes as the drum rotates. If a baffle cracks or comes loose at one end, it lifts and bangs against the drum wall with each rotation. The sound is a hollow knock or bang that is irregular and louder than a simple squeak. We tighten or replace the loose baffle to stop the noise.
Less common but worth checking: the blower wheel circulates air through the drum and exhaust path. If its bearing wears or a sock has been sucked into the blower housing, you'll hear a whining or grinding sound that is constant regardless of drum direction. A failing motor bearing produces a similar persistent hum or squeal. We inspect both during diagnosis.

The part is worn but still functioning. Repair cost is low. The dryer still works normally. This is the best time to fix it.
The worn part is degrading faster. Other components start taking excess stress. If the idler pulley seizes, the belt wraps around the motor shaft and can cause motor damage.
Drum stops turning mid-cycle. Clothes are wet and stuck inside. Now you need the same repair plus potential secondary damage. Emergency call, same cost or higher.
